Jan Mankes (Meppel 15-8-1889 - Eerbeek 23-4-1920) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. He studied and sketched his objects until he could paint them from his imagination. He painted the subjects not accourding reality, but with their essence. Mankes painted what could be seen in his surroundings. For example, he painted many birds and farm animals as well as landscapes and the view from his homes and studio. They are fine and tranquil little works.
Jan Mankes died of tuberculosis at the age of 30. He left behind an oeuvre of about 150 paintings, about 100 drawings and over 40 sheets of graphics, mainly etchings and woodcuts.
